Tanzania Packages

Mt. Kilimanjaro –Machame

Duration: 7 Days

If climbing mountains is your passion, then the Kilimanjaro challenge will take your breath away. Rising to 19,340 ft., it is the tallest free standing mountain in the world. Most of the area Kilimanjaro is defined by the Kilimanjaro National Park, which is a UNESCO

This is probably the most scenic and most beautiful route to the summit. The 6-day route is, however, physically more challenging than the Marangu route. The day walks are longer and steeper; however the summit night is one hour shorter.  Only tented accommodation available, which can be less comfortable and will require a good sleeping bag and hiking mattress.

Day 1:  Pick up from Ilboru Safari Lodge and proceed to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate at Machame for the first section of the climb through the montane forest to Machame Campsite at 10,000ft/3,000m. This trek is 5 to 7 hours. The porters will arrive before you do and pitch the tents and have dinner ready. Overnight stay at Machame Camp.

Day 2:  Following the steep ridge and across heath and moorland to “picnic rock” and the Shira plateau, to Shira Campsite at 12,500ft/3,800m for an overnight stay at Shira camp.  Trekking time 5 to 7 hours.

Day 3:  Heading towards Kibo, crossing a broad valley and climbing to a ridge crest, crossing scree slopes and a river valley to reach Barranco Campsite at 13,000ft/3,900m.   Overnight stay at Barranco Camp. Trekking time 5 to 7 hours.

Day 4:  Cross the floor of the Great Barranco Valley, up the Barranco Wall to the Karanga River – the last water point on this route.  A steep climb over rocky slabs to Barafu Campsite at 15,500ft/4,600m.  Overnight at Barafu camp.  Trekking time 8 to 9 hours.  PS  Barafu means ice in Swahili.  Does that tell you anything?

Day 05:  An early start for the summit – Uhuru Peak the highest point in Africa at 19,340ft/5,896m taking 6 to 7 hours. Descend via Barafu Campsite through the forest to Mweka Campsite at 10,000ft/3,000m.  Overnight stay at Mweka Camp.  The decent is from 5 to 7 hours.  This is a long and arduous day.

Day 06:  Descend through the forest to the park gate at Mweka Wildlife College – 3 to 4 hours – Transfer to Arusha town for overnight stay.

Optional Day 7 – If you take the extra day, you will spend it around Barranco Camp.  This will aid in acclimatization.

Includes:

  • Machame route trekking for 6 days/5 nights.
  • All park fees for client.
  • 3 meals a day plus a cup of hot drink.
  • Return transfer from Arusha to Moshi town to Machame route entrance gate.
  • Entry fee for crew.
  • Payment to the crew.
  • Meals for the crew

Excludes:

  • Tips for guides, cooks and porters.
  • Hire of any equipment or gear besides those arranged and provided by the office.
  • Medical treatment or check up.
  • Laundry service, telephone calls, beer, soft drinks, gifts and souvenirs.
  • Personal Life Insurance.
  • Any rescue fee other than that of the Kilimanjaro national park authority.
  • All other items of a personal nature.

Training:

As soon as you’ve decided that you’re going to climb Kilimanjaro, start training.  Physical fitness will play a major role in your goal to reach the summit.  Your climb will be more enjoyable if you are in optimum physical condition

The best exercise for Kilimanjaro is to do lots of walking, preferably at an elevated pace. Walk as much as you can during the week, with in between aerobic activity, e.g., cycling, running, etc.

Head for the hills on the weekend.  Carry a knapsack while you practice as you will be carrying a few personal items yourself, while the porters will carry all the food, bedding, tents, etc.   Try to walk for 6 to 8 hours, perhaps even on consecutive days.  Use the boots that you will bring with you to Kilimanjaro so that they are well worn in.  Initially pace yourself but then increase your aerobic activity.

Try to incorporate breathing exercises, e.g. yoga breathing techniques.  No one is immune to altitude sickness so trying to breathe in as much oxygen as possible will be crucial to your climb as you go higher and higher.  Focus on breathing techniques that help keep you calm and focused.

Remember that climbing Kilimanjaro is a walk, not a run, but one which requires a higher than usual aerobic capacity due to the extreme altitude. Just get as fit as you reasonably can in the timescale available … make it a priority and make the effort. That way if you don’t make it to the top at least you know you tried your best.
