Latham Island Spearfishing Tour
Latham Island is locally known as “Fungu Kizimkazi” or “Fungu Baraka”. Part of the Zanzibar Archipelago, Latham is a flat coral island located some 40 nautical miles south east of Zanzibar Island. Latham is a 10 nautical mile by 4 nautical mile reef rising from approximately 500 m of water and coming up to form a sand island at it’s centre. The island is only inhabited by birds, whose nesting sites make up for a highly recommended visit to the island.
From September through March every year, Latham Island is THE top location in the world for hunting Giant Dogtooth Tuna. These fish aggregate there, during which large schools, sometimes numbering up to 30 to 50 fish at a time, average between 30 kgs to 150 kgs in weight.
Latham Island is the location where two of our clients shot what still are the world’s biggest Dogtooth Tuna ever taken by spear, 109.1 kgs and 110.3 kgs. Since then, Latham Island has consistently produced big Dogtooth Tuna, many in the 60 kg – 90 kg size class. Larger fish have been regularly seen and shot, and simply lost due to their sheer power. ”

What You Can Expect
Become a spearfishing extraordinaire, ready to hunt! This three nights spearfishing experience will give you all of the skills and knowledge you need to become an expert Spearo! You will learn breath hold, free diving techniques and skills from our spearfishing instructor. Catch your own dinner and learn about the art of Spearfishing from the experts.
This spearfishing experience is designed to give you all the knowledge and skills to become an established spear fisherman. This is the only experience of its kind around and can be completed by anyone who is a competent swimmer. No prior qualifications needed! Complete two dives and become an expert on breathe-hold techniques!
In this experience you learn about the history of spearfishing and its ancient origins and developing hunting techniques. You will also take part in numerous workshops. In the first workshop you will learn how to use your equipment and develop your handling skills.
In the second workshop you will learn all about breathe-hold techniques that are pivotal to spearfishing as well as safety necessities for the sport. You will learn all about the different kinds of local species of fish as well as Latham Island which is great for spearfishing.
